The National Safety Council launched this year’s National Safety Month with a focus on fall down prevention. Each year more than 2 million people are treated for non-fatal fall down injuries in the US. Fall down injuries frequently result in traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and broken bones.
Fall down injures are especially common amongst older Americans, in fact one in three older Americans fall every year. An estimated 25,000 older Americans die due of injuries related to fall down accidents each year.
Fall down injuries are often preventable. Here are some simple safety improvements you can make in your home/workplace:
- Remove clutter and unnecessary hazards
- Always clean spills immediately
- Keep walkways well lit
- Install railings on both sides of stairwells.
