New York, Slow to Act on Nursing Home Abuse and Neglect Allegations

If you or a loved one was abused or neglected in a nursing home how long do you think it would take the State to investigate? 1 day? A week? A month? A recent audit released by Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli shows it takes the state an average of 228 days to complete investigations into complaints.

Serious incidents were labeled as ‘priority one’ investigations, meaning there was a substantial danger to public health and safety, yet still, officials failed to act in a timely fashion.

Signs of nursing home abuse include but are not limited to:

  • Bedsores
  • Sudden, unexplainable injuries such as bruises and broken bones
  • Changes in normal behavior
  • Poor personal hygiene
