On Sunday, August 23rd a fire broke out in a Rockaway home. Firefighters struggled and were ultimately unable to rescue two people inside due to what has been classified as a “hoarding condition.”
“The house was very cluttered, extremely on that first floor where the first was, so it hampered the first two units trying to push in to knock down the fire.”- FDNY Spokesperson.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, “many fire departments are experiencing serious fires, injuries, and deaths as the result of compulsive hoarding behavior. The excessive accumulation of materials in homes poses a significant threat to firefighters fighting fires and responding to other emergencies in these homes and to residents and neighbors.”
If you or a loved one suffers from a hoarding condition evaluate your doors and windows to ensure they are not blocked. Also, check the floor to make sure you are able to exit your home without tripping or falling on items on the floor.
