A natural gas explosion during excavation left a man with devastating, catastrophic injuries. The utility responsible had failed to keep accurate records of its own underground gas lines, so the lines were never properly marked before digging began. After the court granted summary judgment against the utility, the case settled the day before jury selection for $125 million, believed to be the largest settlement for a single injured person in New York State history.
