Bristol Community College Data Breach

In May 2023, Bristol Community College, located in Attleboro, Massachusetts, informed state regulators and notified its faculty and students that between December 14 and 23, 2022, an intruder gained unauthorized access to its network and extracted information about more than 56,000 individuals.

That information taken may have included victims’ full names, Social Security numbers, taxpayer identification numbers, dates of birth, driver’s license numbers or state identification numbers, bank account information, credit or debit card information, passport numbers, medical information, Medicare/Medicaid numbers, and/or health insurance policy information.

Risks and Legal Rights of Data Breach Victims

In notices it sent to potential breach victims, Bristol Community College stressed that it did not know about any identity theft incidents or other improper use of the information intruders accessed.

But the risk of fallout from the attack is undeniable.

The exposed information Bristol described could provide identity thieves with a goldmine they can use to open fraudulent credit card accounts, apply for loans, or collect government benefits.

Victims whose identities cybercriminals exploit see their finances, credit histories, and online (and offline) reputations severely damaged. It can take years for the full scope of the harm to emerge, and even longer to repair the harm inflicted.

But still, there’s hope for victims of the Bristol Community College data breach.

If Bristol notified you that the intrusion into its systems compromised your sensitive personal information, or if you are a current or former Bristol student or staff member whose data may have been taken, you have valuable legal rights to demand compensation.
