Heater Cooler Medical Device
Heater cooler devices are used in approximately 250,000 heart bypass procedures each year in the United States. The Center for Disease Control has issued an alarming warning to open heart surgery patients and to hospitals that conduct open heart surgeries: contaminated heater cooler devices have been linked to serious and possibly life threatening infections (NTM infections).
In some cases NTM infections become chronic and require ongoing treatment and medication. Symptoms of an NTM infection include:
- Shortness of breath
- Weight loss
- Night sweats
"Patients who have had open heart surgery should seek medical care if they are experiencing symptoms associated with infections, such as night sweats, muscle aches, weight loss, fatigue, or unexplained fever. This advice follows new information indicating that some LivaNova PLC (formerly Sorin Group Deutschland GmbH) Stöckert 3T heater-cooler devices, used during many of these surgeries, might have been contaminated during manufacturing which could put patients at risk for life-threatening infections."- The Centers for Disease Control
Unfortunately some manufacturers fail to properly vet their products prior to distributing, and all too often their negligence has devastating effects on unsuspecting consumers. Jacoby and Meyers has held negligent individuals and corporations accountable since 1972.
