Motorcyclists Are Relying on You. Here’s Why

preventing motorcycle injuries

According to experts, New York State has the fifth largest population of registered motorcycles in the Country. In total there are more than 4 million motorcycles registered in the U.S.

Many of us are proud to call New York home, and would happily step up to create safer communities if given the chance. What many people do not realize is every time you get behind the wheel, you have the ability either to create safer roads or to put others at unnecessary risk for harm and even death.

Many drivers choose to drive recklessly (by speeding, driving distracted and ignoring traffic laws). These drivers tend to learn when it’s too late, meaning they have either hurt themselves or another driver. If the other driver happens to be a motorcyclist, the effects are often devastating.

Approximately 80% of reported motorcycle crashes result in injury or death, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association. Motorcycle fatalities represent 13% of all highway fatalities each year.

According to the National Safety Council, the majority of motorcycle crashes occur when a non-motorcycle driver enters the motorcyclist’s right of way. Drivers, remembering the following may reduce your chances of injuring a motorcyclist:

  • Motorcycles are smaller than other vehicles and can be difficult to see, especially if the motorcycle is in your blind spot or if your view is obstructed.
  • Motorcycles move differently than other vehicles, don’t assume you can anticipate a motorcyclists next move.
  • Distracted drivers and speeding drivers have a significantly higher chance of being involved in a wreck.
