Health Department to Investigate Impacts of New York City Housing Authority’s Lead Paint Failures

In late 2017 news surfaced of major failures by the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA):

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, children who are exposed to lead paint have an increased risk of brain and nervous system damage, slowed growth and development, learning and behavior problems, and hearing and speech problems.

The NYCHA (New York City Housing Authority) is required by Federal regulations to conduct annual inspections of all apartments with presumed lead paint, but recent investigations uncovered the NYCHA had violated local and federal regulations by failing to perform lead paint checks. The state health department is now opening an investigation into possible impacts of the NYCHA’s failures.

State Sen. James Sanders (D-Jamaica) mentioned problems with lead paint, as well as mold and heating outages, in NYCHA developments in his district, which includes South Jamaica, Ozone Park and parts of Far Rockaway.

“I’m very concerned about what’s going on,” Sanders said. “What can you do about this problem that’s in NYCHA? We need to have some type of resolution to this problem of mold, lead and heating problems.” – The Daily News
