BMW, Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru, and Toyota are amongst the automakers involved in a massive airbag recall. A statement from Nissan:
“The propellant could potentially deteriorate over time due to environmental factors [due to many years in high humidity conditions], which could lead to over-aggressive combustion in the event of an airbag deployment. This could create excessive internal pressure within the inflator and could cause the inflator housing to rupture.”
The recall will take time to orchestrate, yet according to Secretary Foxx “Today is a major step forward public safety.”
The recall was initially issued for vehicles sold in high humidity areas yet is now nationwide.
