Last week the New York Times published a two part article regarding the widespread exploitation of nail salon employees. The articles shed light on nail salon employees who were forced to work long hours in potentially unhealthy situations, sometimes deprived of hard earned wages. Gov. Andrew Cuomo has responded with a specialized task force.
According to Cuomo, the task force will determine if employees are due unpaid wages, and shut down any unlicensed facilities. The task force will also address health regulations and see to it that they are implemented.
New guidelines and protocols will help protect workers from harmful chemicals, such as dibutyl phthalate, toluene and formaldehyfe, used in nail products and linked to fetal defects and leukemia.
“New York State has a long history of confronting wage theft and unfair labor practices head on,” said Cuomo, “We will not stand idly by as workers are deprived of their hard-earned wages and robbed of their most basic rights.”
