Indian Point, located just 40 miles north of New York City was shut down on Saturday due to a transformer fire. Emergency responders were called to the site after reports of an explosion and smoke over the facility. The fire was extinguished and no damage to the facility was reported.
While New York City did not experience any disturbances, details are still emerging regarding an oil leak in the Hudson River.
According the NRC’s website, the site which generates about 20 percent of US electricity use is one of only 99 nuclear power plants licensed to operate in the US.
Several environmental groups have rallied for the plant to be shut down. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is also in favor of the plant being permanently shut down, due to its close proximity to New York City.
