$241 Million Dollars Spent in Five Years on Rodent Infested Homeless Shelters

The Homeless Services Department is acting swiftly to address the placement of NYC homeless in rundown hotels and dwellings, many of which have proven unsafe for occupants. Millions of tax payer dollars were spent on accommodations that have recently been cited for various fines and code violations ranging from flee infestations, to vermin to lead paint.

Homeless Services Commissioner Gilbert Taylor reports “We have already begun implanting meaningful changes to improve our accountability and oversight of shelter providers, including increasing compliance and doing more inspections. Our main concern is bringing order to a complex shelter, while providing humane and safe shelter to homeless individuals and families.”
