US Senators Charles Schumer and Richard Blumenthal introduced legislation that would require passenger and freight railroads to install the positive train control safety system by 2018.
The legislation is a direct response to a bill approved by a Senate panel in March, which would extend the deadline to integrate new technology by 2020.
Numerous train crashes prompted the initial push for safer railroads. “Each and every day, millions of people put their live in the hands of the railroads and that’s why this plan needs to get fast tracked and implemented. We cannot allow for extension after extension when we have the means to get this done,” said Shumer.
