During his State of the City address, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that this year the city will issue municipal ID cards to help undocumented New Yorkers open banks, file police complaints, and lease apartments. The ID cards, according to de Blasio, will “protect the almost half-million undocumented New Yorkers, whose voices too often go unheard.” But it’s not just the immigrants who will be able to get these ID cards. De Blasio plans on reaching out to all New Yorkers, regardless of immigration status. He will issue these municipal ID cards and make them available to all NYers this year so that no one will have to go without have a bank account, library card, leases, etc. because of lack of identification.
