Newly Discovered Problems with Vitamins & Supplements

According to Dr. Ken Spaeth, chief of occupational and environmental medicine for North Shore LIJ Health System, Americans should be concerned about heavy metals and PCBs existing in supplements and vitamins.

A recent Newsday report indicnated that 70% of all supplement companies have violated the FDA’s manufacturing regulations.

Consumers are put at risk by poorly measured ingredients, contaminated manufacturing equipment, pesticide in herbal products, even bacteria in pediatric vitamins. Many companies do not even have basic recipes for vitamins and other supplements they sell.

Approximately half of the U.S. population – 150 million people – consume multivitamins, mineral tablets, weight-loss aids, herbal remedies and/or protein powders.

There have been 16 nationwide recalls issued in the last two months for reasons that include products containing anabolic steroids. Dr. Spaeth treated more than 20 people who became ill in that case.

Supplements are classified as food and are not regulated the same way that pharmaceutical products are.

By estimate, vitamin sales generate more than $28 billion a year.
