A 4-year-old girl was killed after her and her grandmother were struck by an SUV and pinned to a wall at 97th Street and Amsterdam Avenue on Tuesday, June 4.
A 17-year-old driver, who the police say did not have a valid license, chose to flee a routine traffic stop on an Upper West Side street. Eight blocks and roughly 30 seconds later, the pursuit came to an abrupt and tragic end. Police say the teenager, Franklin Reyes, lost control of his SUV, fatally killing 4-year-old Ariel Russo, as she walked on the sidewalk with her grandmother.
Police arrested Reyes on charges of manslaughter and vehicular manslaughter. He had borrowed his family’s car without permission and was driving with only a learner’s permit.
